Applying Gender X Cultural Perspectives in Tourism Research

  Gender has become an increasingly prominent lens in tourism research, generating a growing body of work that examines women’s roles and experiences across travel, employment and entrepreneurship. This presentation reviews these developments and highlights the value of integrating gender with cultural perspectives. Drawing on an intersectional lens, it examines how women’s experiences are shaped by the interplay of social, cultural, and structural influences. It also outlines key theoretical and methodological considerations, and identifies future research directions that advance inclusive, context-sensitive and diverse understandings of tourism experiences and practices.

  Bio:
  Dr Elaine Chiao Ling Yang is an Associate Professor of Tourism and the Program Director of Research Studies at Griffith Business School and an Associate of Equality in Tourism. Her research focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion in tourism-related industries, with a specialised interest in gender equality and inclusive research methods. She has collaborated with Tourism Australia, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Asian Development Bank, ECPAT and other organisations and government agencies on consultancy and capacity-building projects. She recently led a digital capacity building project funded by the Australian Government, reaching 100 women weavers and weaving entrepreneurs and establishing a network of 59 local trainers. Elaine has published 55+ journal articles and 5 books, including the Routledge Handbook of Gender in Tourism. She has received multiple research and teaching awards, including the prestigious Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education Fellow Award (2023).

妖怪は地域を動かすか？

～京都から世界へ、妖怪・百鬼夜行とまちおこし実践の20年

• 概　要：
  近年、アニメやマンガ、ゲームなどのポップカルチャーを起点とした「コンテンツツーリズム」は、観光振興や地域ブランディングの手法として広く知られるようになってきました。しかし一方で、コンテンツを「消費」するだけでなく、地域に根づき、長期的に継続していく実践は決して多くありません。
  
  本研究会では、京都・大将軍商店街「妖怪ストリート」を拠点に、妖怪という地域文化資源を用いた創作・イベント・観光実践を約20年にわたり継続してきた、株式会社 百妖箱 代表取締役・河野隼也氏をお招きします。
  
  河野氏は、大学院での地域調査をきっかけに、商店街での妖怪イベントに関わり、学生主体の創作集団として活動を開始しました。その後、「一条百鬼夜行」「嵐電妖怪電車」「モノノケ市」など数々の企画を立ち上げ、研究と実践の往復を重ねながら、活動は法人化され、現在も京都を拠点に国内外で展開されています。
  
  本講演では、
  ・妖怪はどのようにして「地域文化資源」として扱われてきたのか
  ・研究から始まった実践が、なぜ途切れずに続いてきたのか
  ・産学連携や学生主体の活動を、どのように無理なく成立させてきたのか
  といった点を軸に、成功事例としてではなく、試行錯誤や葛藤を含めたリアルな実践のプロセスを語っていただきます。
  
  理論と現場、研究と事業、創作と制度のあいだを往復しながら展開されてきた百妖箱の実践は、コンテンツツーリズムを「一過性の企画」ではなく、「続く文化的実践」として捉え直すための多くの示唆を与えてくれるはずです。

  Dr. Erose Shapit is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing, International Business and Tourism, Faculty of Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Dr. Erose is listed in the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List for the sixth time (2021-2025) and ScholarGPS Highly Ranked Scholar in Tourism in recognition of exceptional productivity, noteworthy impact and quality of scholarly work in the top 0.05% of scholars in the field of tourism worldwide. He is ranked 81 out of 9676 authors in the field of sub-field: Sport, Leisure & Tourism. Dr. Erose is a prolific researcher and has developed a noteworthy critical mass of outputs in the field of consumer behaviour in tourism that is globally recognised. He has worked with high-profile UK collaborators, and a range of international collaborators as well as enjoys a prominent standing within the field of tourism, hospitality and leisure. He serves on the editorial boards of several international peer reviewed journals and was appointed Regional Editor of Europe for International Journal of Tourism Research and Associate Editor for International Journal of Tourism Cities. His global recognition of research excellence is also evidenced through honorary positions at international universities and membership of research groups and professional bodies including University of Eastern Finland, Finland.

Spatial Patterns and Determinants of Bed and Breakfasts in the All-for-One Tourism Demonstration Area of China: A Perspective on Urban–Rural Differences

• Abstract:
  The spatial structure of Bed and Breakfast (B&B) development plays a crucial role in promoting integrated urban–rural development. However, existing B&B research has predominantly focused on single large cities, neglecting to explore the spatial patterns of B&B development and their influencing factors from the perspective of urban–rural differences. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive case study in an all-for-one tourism demonstration area in Hainan Province, China. We adopt geospatial analysis methods and ridge regression models to investigate the characteristics of urban–rural disparities in B&B distribution and to identify the primary factors influencing their spatial arrangement. The research findings reveal valuable insights: (1) B&B establishments in the tourism demonstration area exhibit clustering with notable variations in clustering intensity between urban and rural regions; (2) essential factors affecting the spatial distribution of B&Bs include transportation accessibility, reliance on tourism attractions, B&B development infrastructure, and the availability of living services; (3) tourism resource dependence emerges as the most significant driving force behind B&B agglomerations in the tourism demonstration area; and (4) road network density, hotel service availability, and neighborhood residential density are three additional critical factors affecting B&B distribution, with their influence varying between urban and rural B&Bs. Based on these key findings, we propose development strategies for optimizing B&Bs’ spatial structure in the tourism demonstration area and outline a blueprint for fostering integrated urban–rural development.

  Lin CHEN, Associate Professor, currently serves as Associate Chair of the Department of Human Geography and Urban-Rural Planning at the School of Geography, South China Normal University, and Deputy Director of the Asian Geography Research Center. Primary research areas include area studies and rural development research. In recent years, he has published over twenty papers in high-level journals. He has led one National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) General Program project, two Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) research projects, and one Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology Overseas Distinguished Professor Program project. He currently serves as a committee member for the Agricultural Geography and Rural Development Committee and the Marine Geography Committee of the Chinese Geographical Society, and as a council member for the “Marine Strategy and Security Committee” of the China Ocean Development Research Association. Additionally, he is an international editorial board member for the Japanese Journal of Geographical Sciences and oversees editorial duties for the South China Geographical Journal.

Postindustrial enrichment and the touristization of beer heritage

• Abstract:
  I this talk, I will use different cases of touristization of beer heritage in order to explore the phenomenon of enrichment as theorized by Luc Boltanski and Arnaud Esquerre. Enrichment refers to a transition in forms of value production in postindustrial countries, where new forms of commodification tend to focus on difference and the uniqueness of products, rather than on the standardization of products, which was characteristic of industrial capitalism. The presentation will contrast three different cases, Heineken Experience in Amsterdam, the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, and lambic tourism in Belgium. Three components of the process of economic enrichment will be addressed: the use of time as a resource for value extraction, the construction of different spatial narratives of brand singularization, and the valuing of the subjective and individual experience of consumers through experiential environments.

Researching the Rural: Languages, Knowledge Production and Decoloniality

• Abstract:
  Within the broader scholarly fields of rural community development and governance, this presentation explores the challenges of knowledge production that arise in moving from empirical research – often situated within specific linguistic contexts – to international dissemination and recognition, which almost inevitably take place in English. Drawing on literature from translation and language politics, as well as professional working experience across various linguistic and cultural contexts (English, Greek, Japanese, Turkish), this presentation discusses another ‘politic of the rural’ which is not about discursive representations of the rural, but the natural languages (and their politics) that academic knowledge about the rural is produced. As such, using linguistic variations of rurality, the presentation discusses and problematizes broader concerns about academic knowledge and decoloniality.

He has served as Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo in Japan and Visiting Professor at Tongji University in China. He is Associate Editor of the journal Habitat International, and currently serves on the board of the Journal of Rural Studies, Progress in Planning, Planning Practice & Research, and Rural Society. Recent books include: Postcapitalist Countrysides: From Commoning to Community Wealth Building (UCL Press, 2025); Town and Country Planning in the UK (Routledge, 2024); Rural Places and Planning: Stories from the Global Countryside (Policy Press, 2022); and The Routledge Companion to Rural Planning (Routledge, 2019).
